Draw the regions
Every county in the lower 48 states and DC is assigned to its nearest participating theater by straight-line distance. Nearby Hollywood venues share one region because they are realistic alternatives.
Find the nearest U.S. theater presenting Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey on true 15-perf/70mm IMAX film, then explore how access compares across the country.
The map
Each county is colored for the closest theater or nearby group of theaters.
The theaters
Regions are ranked by the number of residents for every seat offered on a typical day.
How to read the ranking
A 250-seat auditorium with five screenings offers 1,250 seats on a typical day. We compare those seats with the population of its map region.
How it works
Modeling access to a rare film format, built from theater capacity, a typical day of screenings, and regional population.
Every county in the lower 48 states and DC is assigned to its nearest participating theater by straight-line distance. Nearby Hollywood venues share one region because they are realistic alternatives.
Most screening counts come from Saturday, August 8, 2026. When a complete schedule was not available, we averaged published showtimes from the following week. We use those counts as a consistent stand-in for a typical day. Actual showtimes will vary during the run.
Regional population comes from the U.S. Census ACS. Expand any theater for its seat count, screening count, capacity math, and seat-count source.
